APID was formed by thirteen Interior Design Companies along with the AUD, who collectively recognised the need for a body that would be a platform for the industry for all its constituents to work together for common benefit.
It was registered on November 25, 2005 as a Business Forum with the Department of Economic Development, Government of Dubai. Kenneth Laidler was elected the first President, and Dr. John Alexander Smith, the Vice President of the Association.
